Worship Arts Session – Sacred Sound
Worship Arts sessions are on the first Sundays of the month, where we explore the arts in worship design – from music to movement to visuals and much more. This year, to align with our Generations theme, we’re exploring forms and modalities that may have been practiced by the very earliest human worshipers. So far we’ve looked at earthworks and sandplay, labyrinth, sacred chant, singalongs, and sacred smells.
This time, we’re welcoming the amazing Andrea Cariño, in a discussion and play session about Sacred Sound. Andrea is a trained musician, multi-instrumentalist and highly experienced sacred sound practitioner. Her work employs instruments ranging from guitars to gongs to singing bowls of many kinds, flutes and stringed instruments from many cultures.
We’ll discuss the history of these types of sacred sound across global traditions, see several example instruments, and even try some out. Kids are welcome, but please note: many of these instruments are delicate, so this session may not be appropriate for unsupervised or very active/energetic little ones.
We’ll explore questions like
- what’s the earliest archeological evidence for sacred sound practice
- how does biology impact our experience of sacred tone
- where do our unique personal responses and preferences come from
- are these instruments difficult to master
For those who love soundbaths: this won’t be quite like a soundbath immersion experience or therapeutic session, but more a mixture of learning and sampling. Also, for this session, we’ll leave out most drum and unpitched percussion, since we’re planning a drum-focused session for a later date.
This session requires no fee or registration.
Location: L2 Meditation Hall
As always, if you have input, but you can’t attend these meetings, email your thoughts about Worship Arts to erinm@seattleunity.org.
