The Risers
The way out is through, the best way through is together.
Last fall, the Unity Worldwide Ministries and Unity World Headquarters issued a joint statement about Unity’s spiritual values and the need to courageously put them into practice. In response, many in our Seattle Unity community came together to form a Spirit Group, The Risers, who are standing up for democracy, dignity, compassion, and justice.
In part, the Unity Worldwide Ministries statement said:
Unity around the world stands on the truth that every being is an expression of God. This truth compels us to end division, to stand shoulder to shoulder, and to let compassion be our action, peace our path, and Spirit our unwavering guide.
We are committed to building a world where all life can breathe, belong, and thrive. In a nation founded to honor liberty and law, justice always prevails; families are preserved, leaders speak for their communities without fear of retribution, education is upheld with integrity and accountability, courts act fairly to challenge discrimination, and government protects and serves all. And we know that these same principles resonate far beyond our borders, reminding the global family of humanity of our shared longing for justice, peace, and freedom.
The Risers advocate for democracy (ensuring fair elections and encouraging voter registration and turnout), environmental stewardship, a broad range of human rights (but with a current focus on LGBTQ+ community members), and the protection and safety of immigrants living in the United States.
In the face of political affronts to truth, cruel and inhumane practices, hostility to diversity, and unlawful and unjust acts, what can we do? Rather than despair, we respond with hope. We are not silent, but speak out in support of our values. We are not powerless, instead we act. Principled individuals become strong, resilient, and effective when they join together in a spiritual community of social activists.
