Voices of the Soul: Conversational Consciousness

Many people have experienced spontaneous mental conversations and unusual night dreams. This class will address practical questions about how and why these occur. The course will examine the work of American philosopher and psychologist William James, a Harvard professor, and his Transmission Theory of Consciousness. According to James, mental ideas, emotions, and concerns are not produced by neurons firing in the brain but rather result from Universal Consciousness being transmitted into the brain as a “receiving station,” becoming individual human consciousness. In this view, our minds operate more like cell phones than computers.
