Sermon Summary

Title:Beyond Illusion”

http://seattleunity.org — The Annual Theme for Rev. Karen Lindvig’s 2019 sermons is “Riding the Tide of Impermanence.” This sermon is titled “Beyond Illusion.” Karen explores this concept of impermanence by looking deeply into the idea of not seeing what is right in front of us. That is, recognizing the problem of looking through a distorted lens, like rose-colored glasses, and therefore living in denial of what is true, and experiencing negative consequences as a result of not seeing the handwriting on the wall that was there—in plain sight. Karen emphasized this in many areas of life, from the changes in our climate and our own Seattle Unity new building project. She closed with a meditation and reminder that as a society we are capable of fantastic greatness as the Apollo 11 documentary film illustrates so inspiringly.

Quotations related to this sermon:

Soren Kierkegaard:
“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.”

Byron Katie:
“I am a lover of what is, not because I’m a spiritual person, but because it hurts when I argue with reality. When we stop opposing reality, action becomes simple, fluid, kind, and fearless.”

Pema Chodron:
“The more you practice not escaping into the fantasy world of your thoughts and instead contacting the felt sense of groundlessness, the more accustomed you’ll become to experiencing emotions as simply sensation, free of concept, free of story line, free of fixed ideas of bad and good.”

James Tierney Reading “A universe with in us”:

A universe with in us

by Mugerwa Muzamil

Soul, are you a hue of no colour
or you’re like a drop of water
held together by surface tension
Are you infused in all flesh

Soul, when I cut my skin
I’m blind to you
Are you veiled from us like Angels
Does the body take on your shape
or you take on the shape of the body

Soul, are you energy
that you can’t be lost

Are you made of photons or atoms
Are you connected to God
Radiate from flesh to the cosmos
Do you rest, when I sleep
or you wander in the universe

Can you wear flesh
Like we wear clothes
Do you feel without the body
Are you immortal by nature
or by God’s leave

When an entity, do you feed
or you’re like sun of infinite vitality
or you’re a universe with in us
Milky way galaxies in our hearts
Are you reason and doubt
