Seattle Unity: Rising Up!
Seattle Unity: Rising Up!
As a church group engaging in political action, The Risers seek to continually embody the foundational spiritual principles of Unity: love, prayer, inclusiveness, and wholeness – rather than divisiveness.
We operate within legal guidelines for non-profit organizations, meaning no endorsement of or opposition to candidates. Instead, we focus on issues through research and education, vocal support for social justice and a healthy environment, promoting progressive legislation, and encouraging high turnout voting in free and fair elections.
Formed in 2025, The Risers were inspired by Indivisible’s One Million Rising – an effort to organize people to take action in response to the policies and strategies of current political issues. Since then, The Risers have participated in NO KINGS Day marches and street corner protests, made whistle kits (a way to alert neighbors about ICE presence), called and sent emails about proposed federal and state legislation, and asked local officials to protect trees in Seattle.
In addition, individual members have attended other rallies and protests, supported people being released from detention, travelled to other states to get out the vote, taken rapid response and non-violent protest trainings, worked on raising aid funds for the people of Minneapolis, and joined FAN (the Faith Action Network).
Everyone is invited to join in The Risers actions and/or meetings, as well as provide input for future projects. Currently, The Risers meet as follows:
First Sundays, 11:30: Action through signs at the corner of Westlake and Denny and/or “in-house” activities such as postcard writing, phone calls to legislators, making whistle kits, crafting signs for future rallies;
Third Sundays, 11:30: Educational/inspirational/action planning/update meetings in the Sanctuary.
Please note: Activity options and time changes can occur due to emergent issues in the current political climate. To stay up-to-date through emails, please contact Bets Graef at betsygraef@gmail.com. In addition, watch for announcements from Seattle Unity and on the private Facebook page.
The Risers gratefully acknowledge Rev. Diane and all church leadership and staff for supporting this work at this critical time in our country. As a congregation we can make a difference through loving action, and encourage you to join us!
