Sermon Summary

Title: Life Begins Again…—In this Sunday sermon titled “Life Begins Again…,“ Diane Robertson initiates the New Year of 2018 with the White Stone Ritual. She does this in several ways, including offering a framework of understanding about the cycle of a year in pursuit of a new start, a clean slate, a fresh beginning like new snow. Diane describes the Seattle Unity White Stone Ritual as a process in which we ask ourselves, “What is a reach, a stretch, outside the norm? What is a deeper calling, even if it is uncomfortable?” She also prompts our understanding with several stories, including a story about man who had been a member of a hate group who was transformed by two key events, and subsequently founded a group called “Life After Hate.” Diane articulates the importance of countering the prevalence of bad news with a focus on what is working, what is inspiring, and what can move us to positive action. The 34-minute video includes a guided meditation to set the inner stage for the White Stone Ritual, and then offers instructions for completing our heart-felt, heart-led calling for 2018 with the stones and pencils provided to each member of the community.

Key ideas within this sermon:

“Epiphany” is about how we take our inner light that is born and reborn in us continually, but especially during the Christmas season that we are coming out of, and bringing our light more fully into the world.

Through our White Stone Ritual today we are listening deeply, planting seeds of intention for this coming year, and asking: how may we carry our light more fully into our lives and the world.

What is the word that will be your guiding star for 2018?

“Faith” is the actualizing force that brings that which we hold in consciousness into manifestation.

Key quotations related to this sermon:

Revelation 2:17: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give someof the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.”

Kayleen Asbo: “Epiphany is the revelation of Divine Light, a light that can shine forth from each one of us.”

Maya Angelou: “It (epiphany) probably has a million definitions. It’s the occurrence of when the mind, the body, the heart, and the soul focus together and see an old thing in a new way.”

Sharon Salzburg: “The Buddha said, ‘Faith is the beginning of all good things. No matter what we encouter in life, it is faith that enables us to try again, to trust again, to love, again.’ Faith is the animation of the heart that says, ‘I chose life, I align myself with the potential inherent in life, I have myself over to that potential.’ “

John 1:1-5: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him, all tings were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light that shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”
